Hydrocephalus
Shunt
There are two types of conditions related to hydrocephalus which means water on the brain. As our population ages there are conditions like normal pressure hydrocephalus in which the enlargement of the cavities of the brain otherwise called ventricles cause difficulty in concentration, difficulty in walking and loss of bladder control with difficulty in memory. Some of these patients can be treated with shunting procedures like ventricular peritoneal shunt.
Obstructive hydrocephalus is an entity in which there is an obstruction of flow of the spinal fluid either by a birth defect or by an extrinsic mass. This condition can be diagnosed by MRI scan and treated appropriately.
